The Bordeaux-based band led by Hugo Carmouze unveils Microrange, the third single
taken from Troisième Opinion, their twelfth album, set to be released on December 6 via Flippin’ Freaks Records, Howlin’ Banana Records, Les Disques du Paradis, and Nothing
Is Mine.
Microrange delivers a masterclass in noisy pop with its shoegaze-tinged guitar
arrangements and a knack for crafting tracks that feel like instant classics. Shifting
seamlessly between calm sections and irresistible choruses, bolstered by power-pop
harmonies and electrifying crescendos, the song calls to mind the finest moments of Alex G. It’s a standout piece that perfectly encapsulates the melodic, melancholic, and
addictive spirit of Opinion’s new album.
Microrange was written by Hugo Carmouze during the first few months he lived in
Bordeaux, a defining period in his life. He had just started at the University of Bordeaux,
and it was his first time living alone in a big city.
The song reflects the simultaneously exciting and daunting experience of being a young adult with responsibilities, being far from home, and feeling like you don’t quite fit in at university. It explores on the struggles of making friends, missing classes because you overslept, or failing to find the right room — all of which lead to feelings of shame or seeing yourself as a loser.
“I tried to give the instrumental an “Epic Indie Rock” vibe to capture the excitement of being a young person from the countryside in a city. At the same time, the lyrics reflect how I realized I was messing up almost everything I tried, even though I was genuinely making an effort. And despite that, I still saw myself as a loser, and I felt others saw me that way too. The outro, “I want to get up, I want to go down,” represents what was going on in my head during those moments. On one hand, I wanted to succeed and prove I could become someone. But on the other hand, I kept failing at simple things, which led to the “I want to go down” — wanting to hide out of shame.”
