Track Highlight: Black Budget – ‘Insanity’

Toronto based desert punk band Black Budget released their highly anticipated single ‘Insanity’ January 31. The single marks the third release under King Pizza Records label based out of Brooklyn, NY. ‘Insanity’ spits roaring vocals, feral bass, punchy drums, and melodic guitars. 2 minutes and 23 seconds of contained chaos that best captures the essence of Black Budget. It is packed with energy, chaos, and grit. A soundtrack for when you’re losing your mind, going for a long and fast drive, or simply if you wanna break some shit.

The band brings together 4 slabs of molten rock that combines the spirit and energy of punk with the groove and heaviness of metal, delivered with ferocious vocals and cynical lyrics.

The bass riff in the intro immediately grabs my attention. Sometimes those riffs are subtle but this one was right in my face. Once the rest of the instrumentals hit, it definitely gives of the desert punk feel and so do the vocals, I’m just not sure I fully resonate with them. Punk vocals are always gritty and energetic, which is fine, but they are also a little echo-ey but again, that is the style so it fits this well. It’s a very fast-paced upbeat song, but I think the intro to the bridge with the bass highlight transitioning into the full bridge is great and is a culmination of the entire song. Lastly are the haunting outro vocals – not a bad way to end it.
