Self-coined Ancient Fairytale Punk (Forntida sagopunk) rockers Herjan, hailing from Sweden, released their EP “Fränder och fä” back in October but deserve their recognition much beyond that. The band writes songs about old tales from the past in Norse mythology and the track I decided to highlight is ‘Domen över den döde.’
The intro immediately grabbed my attention for this track. The way there was high energy right out the gate and that it continued into the first verse and beyond is fantastic. For me personally, this is my tempo type song that I truly vibe with. While I don’t understand the lyrics being in another language, I enjoy the vocals themselves, especially the group vocals peppered throughout. Whenever I listen to music from Norway and the immediate region, its usually dark and brutal and some for of blackened death metal so its a very nice change of pace to have more of a pop punk feel to it.
